Why ProfessionalS Should Prioritize Fitness: Unlocking the SUCCESS-Boosting Benefits of Exercise8/28/2024 For too many years, I prioritized work over exercise. I'd get up early, but to work ... not to work out. I did this in my 20s and 30s as I was grinding to make my mark -- late nights ... early mornings ... little to no exercise. The result? I had success. But I'm now in my 50s and at war with my body. Since 2022, I've lost 43 pounds ... gained 20 back ... lost 10 more ... and now pushing to lose a final 15-20 and get into the best shape of my life. But like I said, it's been a war. As busy professionals, it can be all too easy to let our exercise routines fall by the wayside. Between long work hours, endless meetings, and the never-ending stream of emails, finding time to hit the gym can seem like an impossible feat. However, neglecting physical activity could be sabotaging your ability to win. So here's the thing though: In my own experience I've seen a strong connection between exercise and improved work performance. You can too. By prioritizing your fitness, you can unlock tangible benefits that can propel you forward in your professional life. Here are some ways that exercise can enhance your productivity and mental sharpness. Increased Focus and Concentration One of the most well-documented benefits of exercise is its ability to sharpen cognitive function. During physical activity, your brain releases a surge of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which can improve your ability to focus, concentrate, and think clearly. By incorporating regular exercise into my daily routine, I've been experiencing enhanced mental acuity that's making me a mental monster. I'm finding it easier to tackle complex problems, retain information, and stay focused, even during the most demanding tasks. Improved Time Management and Productivity Exercise doesn't just benefit your mind – it can also boost your physical energy levels and stamina. As I increase my fitness levels, I'm finding that I don't get that afternoon slump or feelings of fatigue that used to derail my workday. Instead, I have the endurance to power through my to-do list with greater efficiency and enthusiasm -- even later in the day. I'm also seeing that exercise is helping me manage my time more effectively. The discipline and routine required to maintain a fitness regimen definitely transfers to my professional life -- so that I'm attacking the workday with a greater sense of structure and organization. Better Stress Management Now this is a Big One ... The high-pressure nature of running companies and developing new businesses can take a significant toll on our mental and emotional well-being. Chronic stress can lead to burnout, impaired decision-making, and a general decline in mood, outlook, and happiness. But here's the secret: Regular exercise can be a powerful antidote to stress. Physical activity triggers the release of endorphins, which can improve your mood, reduce anxiety, and help you manage the demands of your work more effectively. So I've upgraded my self-talk -- especially when the alarm clock goes off: I tell myself that by taking the time to move my body, I'm investing in my long-term resilience and career sustainability. Improved Creativity and Problem-Solving I'm also convinced that the more I exercise, the more of a genius I'm becoming! LOL ... but seriously though, contrary to the popular belief that exercise is solely a physical thing, it can also stimulate your mental creativity and problem-solving abilities. When you engage in physical activity, you're allowing your mind to wander and explore new connections, which can lead to innovative solutions and breakthroughs. By incorporating exercise into your routine, you're not only improving your physical health but also fostering the cognitive flexibility and adaptability that are so crucial in today's rapidly changing business landscape. Conclusion It's taken a while to develop this new habit, but I'm finally at the place where I workout in some way almost every day of the week. If I miss days, I don't miss 2 in a row, and I don't miss more than 2 days a week. My mind is sharper. My body is stronger. My clothes fit better. My swag is up. Well said Tgray, and as you get older you have the added burden of physical ailments which can be delayed by regular P.E.
