Same thing with trying to get fit … focus on taking a 20-minute walk rather than planning a grueling 2-hour workout. I literally just did this, I started by just walking 30-minutes a day no matter what. Once that became a routine, it became much easier to add in 3-5 gym workouts a week. But when I’ve tried to conquer everything all at once in the past, it was just too much. Tackling things in bite-sized pieces can make the task feel more achievable and less intimidating, giving you the boost of motivation you need to keep going. 2. Change Your Environment “Your Honor, I motion for a Change of Venue!” LOL … Sometimes, the key to getting motivated lies in changing your surroundings. If you find yourself struggling to focus or feeling uninspired in your usual workspace, try relocating to a new setting. This could mean taking your work outside for a change of scenery, moving to a different room in your home, or even working from a café or co-working space. The fresh environment can provide a mental reset, stimulating your senses and helping you approach the task with renewed energy. And here’s another thing …. Clean up your workspace. Decluttering and organizing your workspace so that it is clean and well-organized can have a big impact on your mindset and productivity. 3. Reflect on Your "Why" So I’ll be laying in my bed trying to convince myself to get up and go workout. It’s still dark outside. The covers are so nice and warm. You definitely know what I’m talking about! LOL! Ok, when motivation is in short supply, it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. Take a step back and reflect on the underlying reasons why you're pursuing this goal or task in the first place. What is the ultimate purpose or benefit? How will accomplishing this objective positively impact your life, career, or personal growth? Reconnecting with your "why" can reignite your passion and provide the necessary push to keep moving forward. This is where my early morning conversation starts to shift … now I’m saying “Bro … you’re doing so well. You’ve already lost 10 pounds. That flat stomach and six-pack are right around the corner. How bad do you really want this? Plus think about how good you’re gonna feel after you crush this workout.” This conversation usually gets my feet on the floor and me out of the bed! You can even go a step further and create a visual representation of your motivation, such as a vision board or a set of affirmations. Placing these reminders in a prominent spot can serve as a constant source of inspiration and encouragement. Think …. BATHROOM MIRROR!
Why ProfessionalS Should Prioritize Fitness: Unlocking the SUCCESS-Boosting Benefits of Exercise8/28/2024 For too many years, I prioritized work over exercise. I'd get up early, but to work ... not to work out. I did this in my 20s and 30s as I was grinding to make my mark -- late nights ... early mornings ... little to no exercise. The result? I had success. But I'm now in my 50s and at war with my body. Since 2022, I've lost 43 pounds ... gained 20 back ... lost 10 more ... and now pushing to lose a final 15-20 and get into the best shape of my life. But like I said, it's been a war. As busy professionals, it can be all too easy to let our exercise routines fall by the wayside. Between long work hours, endless meetings, and the never-ending stream of emails, finding time to hit the gym can seem like an impossible feat. However, neglecting physical activity could be sabotaging your ability to win. So here's the thing though: In my own experience I've seen a strong connection between exercise and improved work performance. You can too. By prioritizing your fitness, you can unlock tangible benefits that can propel you forward in your professional life. Here are some ways that exercise can enhance your productivity and mental sharpness. Increased Focus and Concentration One of the most well-documented benefits of exercise is its ability to sharpen cognitive function. As I increase my fitness levels, I'm finding that I don't get that afternoon slump or feelings of fatigue that used to derail my workday. Instead, I have the endurance to power through my to-do list with greater efficiency and enthusiasm -- even later in the day. I'm also seeing that exercise is helping me manage my time more effectively. The discipline and routine required to maintain a fitness regimen definitely transfers to my professional life -- so that I'm attacking the workday with a greater sense of structure and organization. Better Stress Management Now this is a Big One ... The high-pressure nature of running companies and developing new businesses can take a significant toll on our mental and emotional well-being. Chronic stress can lead to burnout, impaired decision-making, and a general decline in mood, outlook, and happiness. But here's the secret: Regular exercise can be a powerful antidote to stress. Physical activity triggers the release of endorphins, which can improve your mood, reduce anxiety, and help you manage the demands of your work more effectively. So I've upgraded my self-talk -- especially when the alarm clock goes off: I tell myself that by taking the time to move my body, I'm investing in my long-term resilience and career sustainability. Improved Creativity and Problem-Solving I'm also convinced that the more I exercise, the more of a genius I'm becoming! LOL ... but seriously though, contrary to the popular belief that exercise is solely a physical thing, it can also stimulate your mental creativity and problem-solving abilities. When you engage in physical activity, you're allowing your mind to wander and explore new connections, which can lead to innovative solutions and breakthroughs. By incorporating exercise into your routine, you're not only improving your physical health but also fostering the cognitive flexibility and adaptability that are so crucial in today's rapidly changing business landscape. Conclusion It's taken a while to develop this new habit, but I'm finally at the place where I workout in some way almost every day of the week. If I miss days, I don't miss 2 in a row, and I don't miss more than 2 days a week. My mind is sharper. My body is stronger. My clothes fit better. My swag is up.
